Lawrence Copper Mine Collapse

Governor Josh Adamson Giving An Update On Lawrence Mine Collapse On July 29, 2023

July 29, 2023 - A Message From Governor Joshua Adamson Regarding The Collapse Of The Copper Mine In Lawrence, Mesa.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those trapped in the Lawrence Copper Mine that collapsed a little after 9:20 PM this evening. As we continue to learn more about the collapse, what caused it and the deaths that have been caused, we continue to work with our Federal partners to ensure a safe and swift recovery of survivors(of what may be) and the bodies of the sadly deceased. We will continue to work towards finding the cause of the major collapse that has taken the lives of 90 people(so far), and we are working to find out what can be done to prevent a future collapse of a mining site.

"We are unbelievably sad that the today's tragedy unfolded in such a manner and the deaths that resulted from the collapsed," said Governor Adamson. "We are working with our federal partners to determine the cause of the collapse. We are issuing funding for recovery efforts alongside the federal government's funding for recovery efforts. We will continue to update everyone on the status of our findings."

The Governor's Office has stayed in contact with the recovery efforts, extending funding to the recovery efforts when and where needed, and continues to address recovery updates. Governor Adamson says that he will give continued updates as the recoveries are made, with either dead bodies or live survivors.

"We are continuing recovery efforts and we expect the recovery period to last for the next several weeks. This time frame may change, but we expect at least two weeks," said Governor Adamson. "We are also ordering the Mesa National Guard to the site where the collapse happened to ensure that no one else gets trapped in the rubble."
